Overview

Oxytocin is a naturally occurring nonapeptide hormone, FDA approved for decades under the brand Pitocin to induce labor and control postpartum bleeding. Beyond its obstetric use, it's one of the most extensively studied neuropeptides for social bonding, trust, and attachment behavior, and continues to be researched intranasally for anxiety and autism spectrum applications.

Treatments studied

Labor induction (FDA approved)

Directly triggers uterine smooth muscle contraction via its long-approved obstetric mechanism.

Postpartum hemorrhage (FDA approved)

Contracts the uterus after delivery, helping control bleeding.

Social anxiety (research)

Reduces amygdala reactivity to social cues, an effect studied for social anxiety applications.

Autism spectrum applications (research)

Studied for its role in social bonding circuits relevant to social communication differences.
