Overview

Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a naturally occurring 28-amino-acid neuropeptide produced throughout the gut, brain, and immune system, where it plays a wide-ranging role in regulating inflammation, gut motility, and blood vessel dilation. A synthetic form, Aviptadil, has been studied in clinical trials for severe respiratory conditions and gut-related inflammatory disorders, drawing on VIP's natural anti-inflammatory and tissue-protective signaling.

Treatments studied

Inflammatory bowel disease (preclinical)

Naturally regulates gut motility and local immune activity, the basis for its research interest in inflammatory bowel conditions.

Respiratory inflammation (research)

A synthetic form (Aviptadil) has been studied specifically for reducing severe inflammatory lung damage.

Gut motility disorders (research)

Its natural role in relaxing gut smooth muscle is the basis for research into motility-related digestive conditions.
